Granuloma inguinale is caused by the bacteria Calymmatobacterium granulomatis . The disease is commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas such as Southeast India, Guyana, and New Guinea, but it occurs on occasion in the United States, typically in the Southeast. Granuloma inguinale (also called Donovanosis) is common in some tropical and subtropical regions but rare in cooler climates. Donovanosis is endemic in various parts of the world. Although donovanosis has been reported to co-exist with the human immunodeficiencyvirus (HIV) infection, to our knowledge there have been no reports of co-existent squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in an HIV positive patient. Donovanosis is a predominantly tropical cause of genital ulcer occurring chiefly in small endemic foci in all continents except Europe. Diagnosis requires the careful collection, staining and examination of smears or biopsies of characteristic genital and, occasionally, extragenital lesions for demonstration of the pathognomonic Donovan bodies (Calymmatobacterium granulomatis) within histiocytes. Donovanosis is a chronic bacterial illness frequently associated with sexually transmitted infections (STI) and is under diagnosed both in endemic areas as well as in countries in which doctors have little experience with tropical diseases. The utilization of syndromic diagnosis and treatment of STIs in various parts of the world and the previous use of antibiotics make it difficult to find Donovan bodies in the cytodiagnostic and hystopathological exams, requiring the utilization of technology that is neither routine nor often accessible to confirm the hypothesized diagnosis. HIV has become a very big health threat over the last few decades. This is not the era of forward thinking free sex, it is a world that is callous and really has a lot of different things that can infect you and your partner, so don’t just think you are going to survive sexually transmitted diseases and fight them off with just your luck and advice. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV and AIDS attack the immune system and often destroy its effectiveness. It leaves a person extremely vulnerable to infections and tumors that would otherwise have been handled by the natural functions of the immune system.
